Tarot de MarseilleFour of Pentacles is the fortress of security, control, and the conservation of resources. Attributed to the Sun in Capricorn, this card carries the title Power—the establishment of material security through careful management, but also the danger of becoming imprisoned by what you seek to protect.
The Four of Pentacles asks you to honor stability, but warns against possessiveness and fear of change. The figure clutches a pentacle to his chest while standing upon two others, a fourth balanced upon his crown—the image of one who has achieved security but fears its loss. Behind him, the city he has turned his back on suggests the community and opportunities sacrificed in the pursuit of absolute control.
In Qabbalistic terms, this card corresponds to Chesed, Mercy, in Assiah—the stabilizing force that, when taken to excess, becomes rigidity and fear. The Four of Pentacles reminds you that true wealth is found in generosity, not in withholding. It teaches that the tightest grip often produces the greatest loss, and that real security comes not from hoarding but from wise investment in relationships and community.
