XVII – The Star

The Star shines forth as the goddess unveiled, the cosmic hope that sustains the soul through the dark night following The Tower's destruction. In the Western Mystery Tradition, this card represents Nuit—the Egyptian sky goddess whose body is the heavens—and the Daughter of the Firmament, the Dweller between the Waters. She is the "Star of the Magi," the celestial guidance that leads the wise to rebirth. Assigned the Hebrew letter Tzaddi (צ), meaning "fish-hook," The Star represents the instrument that draws the soul upward from the depths of the unconscious, the connection between the individual spirit and the infinite ocean of cosmic consciousness.

On the Tree of Life, The Star traverses the twenty-eighth path connecting Netzach (Victory) to Yesod (Foundation). This is the path of the natural intelligence, the pristine awareness uncorrupted by sophistication, the state of innocent wisdom that exists before and after the elaborations of civilization. The path carries the purified energy of desire (Netzach) into the matrix of the astral foundation (Yesod), representing the healing and renewal that follows the Tower's destruction. The nude figure shows the soul stripped of all pretense, returned to its essential nature, having nothing to hide and nothing to protect. She pours water onto land and into the pool—conscious and unconscious alike are nourished by the waters of life flowing through her.

The great eight-pointed star represents Venus in her most exalted aspect—pure love and beauty radiating without condition.
